Our Car was Stolen

So.... at 3:30 this morning Anne wakes me up with, "I think our car was just stolen." You probably can understand my stunned response as I struggled to determine if I was actually conscious and if she actually said what I thought she had said.

Sure enough, at around 3:30 am the Accord was stolen from the curb outside our home. I know what you are thinking..... Ha! April Fools. You didn't get me, Craig! No seriously, our car was stolen this morning. Anne woke up because she heard tires screech and she thought to get up and look out the window. To her surprise, the Honda was missing. She immediately woke me and we called the police.

Now the story gets fun..... about 15 min later while Officer Bobo (Yes, that is his name.... not another April Fools attempt. I have the business card to prove it.) was taking down our information and story the thief decided to do a drive by of the scene! Anne pointed out to the officer that our car was driving by our home and he jumped in the cruiser to give chase. This was the thief's signal to accelerate and get the he** out of there. The problem is that he took the turn onto Big Springs (like 1.5 blocks away) a little too fast and slammed into something. Judging by the sound of crunching metal we thought he had hit a parked car. As it turns out, he had just hit the curb pretty hard.

I walked down the street and when I got there the car was in the middle of the road and Office Bobo (seriously) was calling in support to form a perimeter around our neighborhood. He politely asked me to go back home and as I did I saw at least 3 other police cruisers arrive and set-up camp. Anne was able to give a short description of the guy from the brief drive-by (less than 20 years old, red shirt, short brown hair).

We found out a couple of hours later that even though the thief was on foot and had a good sized lead they caught him fairly quickly. The police cleverly followed the barking dog sounds throughout the neighborhood and were able to track down his location. Unfortunately, we also learned that the car was not drivable and so we had to have it towed to an impound lot since it was the middle of the night. It looked to me like he broke the axle near the front right wheel and there were also a bunch of fluids on the road.

So.... that is where things are right now. We are trying to sort out details (get the police report, get an estimate on damage to the vehicle, decide what to do next, etc...). Crazy. Believe me, I wish this was just an April Fools joke but I guess you just never know when stuff like this will happen!

WHOA - that's CRAZY! I mean, good that you (sort of) have your car back, but how scary! I'm guessing you didn't get much sleep after that. Yikes - I'll admit that I *did* keep hoping it was an April Fool's joke. -anne's friend sarah h.

That is hilarious. That is a story you will be telling for some time. That guy deserves to earn a Darwin award for driving back by your house. -another one of anne's friends, margo

That is the most surreal story I have ever heard. April Fool's only adds to the insanity. Kudos to you Anne, btw, for being CSI-on-the-spot. Your powers of observation while under pressure are enviable ;).

Wow, good story. I too am very impressed with Anne's quick response. She woke up at the sound of tires. Impressive! We all know that the house would have to literally be on fire for an Anderson to be awakened (and maybe not even then!)

Awesome story. Seems like your neighborhood has a penchant for car mishaps. At least with this one, no-one really got hurt. I thought for sure, we would have our car stolen in NJ before you guys in Austin.
